The Igniter is an OEM part designed specifically for Whirlpool brand gas dryers. It produces the spark to ignite the burner and initiate drying cycles.  If your original ignitor was round, also order bracket 37001309.

Symptoms of a faulty igniter include:

  • Inability to start or maintain a flame within the combustion chamber
  • Dryer fails to heat or functions intermittently

Potential causes involve typical wear from repeated sparking over many heating cycles. Mineral deposits or moisture intrusion can reduce effectiveness as well.

Compatible models include some brands produced by Amana, KitchenAid, and Kenmore.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Igniter (Part Number: OEM18026382)

Hello Ken, You may want to check the the solenoid on the unit to make sure it is not faulty. You can check the ohms of the coils to check to see if good. Holding coil 58804 terminals 1 to 2 should be 1365 ohms plus or minus 25. Booster coils terminals 1 and 3 should be 560 ohms plus or minus 25. Secondary coil 279834 should read 1220 ohms plus or minus 25. If you have a bad coil it will need to be replaced. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Bob, First place to check is the exhaust vent system, if the venting is restricted, the dryer won't cycle properly and you won't see a change in the temperature settings. Then test the cycling thermostat, remove the blue and purple wire from the termiankls and check for a "closed" circuit, then heat the thermostat with a match and check for an"open" circuit. Then check the thermostat heater circuit for approximately 2400 ohms resistance, with the wires off the components. If all's OK, You'll need to test or replace the temperature selector switch 33001640 .Here's some meter usage information should you need it [http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html]. Good Luck and Thanks
