The Start Button is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This button is located on the control panel and is essential for initiating the wash cycle. When pressed, it sends a signal to the machine's control board to begin the selected washing program.

Causes of a bad start button can include wear and tear from frequent use, electrical issues within the button mechanism, or physical damage from impacts or spills. A malfunctioning start button can prevent the washing machine from starting or responding to user inputs.

Symptoms of a bad start button include:

  • The washing machine not starting when the button is pressed
  • The button feeling loose or unresponsive
  • Intermittent starting or stopping of wash cycles
  • The button sticking or not depressing properly

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hello V.C., This actually sounds like you may have had the machine set to too large a load and the clothes were able to tangle in the excessive amount of water. If not, you should refer to the owners manual or local servicing dealership for advice.

How does someone actually break this button? I found the video very helpful and was able to successfully get my washer running again. However, I don't understand how this button could actually break. My problem was that the tan plastic piece that holds the button had broken off and was no longer hovering over the small switch on the circuit board. Followed the steps in the video to gain access to the real switch and reassembled without the button or the broken plastic. Washer is almost 15 years old and not worth sinking a lot of money into but thanks for getting it going again.

Joe, Normally the button will break just from use or pushing too hard on the start button when starting the unit.

Jennifer, The most likely cause for this will not be the button but will be the user interface that has a broken tab for the button.

Shoba, It is possible that the start button could be sticking but it would be more likely that the user interface would be the issue with the button not coming back out.
