The Flame Sensor is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool gas dryers. This component plays a critical safety role by monitoring the presence of the gas burner flame during the drying cycle.

Causes of needing to replace the flame sensor can include normal wear and tear over extended use, exposure to high temperatures or corrosion, or physical damage to the sensor itself.

Symptoms that may indicate a faulty flame sensor include:

  • The dryer not heating or producing heat properly
  • Error codes related to the gas system or ignition failure
  • The dryer shutting off unexpectedly during cycles

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore gas dryer models.

Hello Armand, The flame sensor should be marked with possibly a 1 and 2 or FS1 FS2. The white goes to the 2 terminal which should be the small and the blue goes to the 1 terminal large.

Bob, Yes, a flame sensor WP338906 with an "open" circuit, would keep the igniter from glowing. Since you've replaced the igniter, you shouldn't have an issue, and the other possibility would be no voltage to the gas valve, or a faulty set of gas valve coils, but these aren't that common an issue. Thanks

Hello Brad, The flame sensor is either open or closed so the two wires cannot be crossed. It doesn't matter which terminal you put the wires on since the circuit doesn't care which way the current flows through its' contacts.

Hello Scott, Based on the information provided, it appears that your secondary coil 279834 for your gas valve is bad. When the unit first comes on the main coil and secondary coil kick in. When it gets going the main cuts out and the secondary is supposed to keep unit going. When this coil is bad it will not allow the unit to reignite.

Hello Sam, Of course I am working with the handicap of no model number, but I would guess that if the ignitor fell off, it was faulty. You need to replace the ignitor and the coils on the safety valve. If this doesn't correct the issue, the gas valve has failed.

Hello Robert, Put the test meter on the RX1 scale and test from one terminal to the other. If it's good it will read just like you touched the two meter leads directly together. This is called zero resistance, (continuity). If the flame sensor is good it will have zero resistance.

Hello Bombay. Check the coils 279834 and see if they test good. You can test the coils using a multi-meter MA-DM1. The two prong coil will read 1,000-1,300 ohms, and the three prong coil will read 1,300-1,400 ohms across prongs 1&2, and 500-600 ohms across prongs 1&3. Test the coils after running the dryer for about 10 minutes. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
