The Lower Door Seal is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dishwashers. This seal runs along the bottom edge of the dishwasher door, creating a tight seal against the tub when closed to contain water inside during cycles.  This seal measures approximately 22 inches in length

Causes of lower door seal failure commonly involve repeated compression stresses from opening/closing actions gradually stiffening the flexible gasket material. Drying out and cracking occurs over years of heat exposure as well.

Symptoms of a worn lower door seal include:

  • Water leaking out from beneath dishwasher door during cycles
  • Difficulty latching door completely from warped seal edges
  • Visible cracks, splits or brittleness along the length of the seal
  • Gaps allowing water intrusion beneath door perimeter

This versatile OEM part is also compatible with select Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, and some Kenmore dishwasher models.

For Whirlpool Lower Door Seal (Part Number: OEM18102624)

George M for Model Number WDT750SAHZ0

On most runs, our WDT750SAHZ0 (~3 years old) dishwasher leaks, after 2.5+ years of fine service (we have probably neglected cleaning the filters often enough). Dishwasher is level, there is no leak near inlet hose, and the drain hose appears secure and is clear. With an endoscope, I've observed water rising and overflowing over the front edge of the tub during the cycle. It does not happen every time; sometimes the water doesn't rise that high. The peak level seems to be variable. During cycles while spraying is audible, there usually zero or very little water visible in the front bottom of the tub; in other parts of the cycle, the tub seems to be ~half full. Late in the cycle, it sometimes (most times) rises enough to overflow the front edge. I believe the float is floating properly, and I've verified that the float switch is ok: I've removed and tested it, and I've also demonstrated that I can cause the initial fill to stop by manually activating the switch from under the tub (release the switch, or pushing the float up with a screwdriver). Is the lower door seal supposed to keep *all* water from reaching the front part of the tub (should I ever be able to see water there?), or just block sprayed water (from misdirected jets, as described elsewhere here) from deflecting forward and out over the edge? The existing lower door seal does not seem to be a true *seal*. The drain pump seems to remove very nearly all water at the end of a cycle, including if I interrupt it when it begins to overflow. There is perhaps as much 1/4" at most remaining in the bottom of the sump below the fine filter at the outlet. I suspect this is normal. Somehow, the washer ends up with too much water, and it overflows. Thoughts? Thanks for any advice you may have. (We live in a rural area and cannot find a professional willing to come out to look at it.)

Penny, If the lower door seal has already been changed then look for too much water getting into the unit which could be a sticking float or a water valve that is not fully shutting off when it finishes filling.

Hello Mark, the seals and gaskets are probably ok, when this type of leak occurs it is typically caused by a misdirected jet of water that is aimed at the door edge, meaning check the lower/upper spray arms for cracks, gaps, worn seals, or poor fit of the water carrying parts in the dishwasher. Once found and corrected the leak will stop.

Hello Dan, check the dishwasher is level, not overfilling, also check there are no problems with the spray arms,(cracked, loose, worn) if ok then the lower door seal is W10909089.

Hello Brian, when this occurs it is referred to as a misdirected water jet. There is a problem with some part of water carrying components inside the tub, meaning it could be a cracked spray arm or a water tube connection that is coming apart when the circulation pump is running. These tend to cause a jet of water to aim downward and force water under the door either on one side, both sides, or in the middle. This is not a tub gasket or seal problem. Carefully inspect the spray arms, their mounting, and water tube connections.

My dishwasher is leaking from the left and/or right side but only close to the end of the wash cycle. While the leak is happening I can hear the dishwasher working and as soon as there is a change in the noise the dishwasher is making the leak stops. Sometimes it leaks once in a cycle, sometime twice. The seal looks good and it's been working away for years so I doubt it's suddenly not level anymore. The spray arm looks ok to me, is there a way to test it? What should I be looking for besides cracks in the spray arm?

1 Answer

It is not likely the spray arms as it only happens at random. Check for cracks or splitting where the spray is formed together. Then to test you set the spray arms to a set position and remember the position and check if the spray arms are in the same position when the cycle is finished. If one is set them again and check for a second cycle. If they do not move there could be a spray arm issue. I think you could have a diverter issue W10537869. You said that there is a sound when this occurs. Possibly the diverter motor/gears making noise and then not diverting properly. Your case could be a tough one to find the cause for but I would be checking that diverter.

Uksid, it would be recommended that the lower spray arm is inspected for any cracks and that the level of the dishwasher is checked. If good, the next step would be inspecting the fill level once it has fully filled. The water level should be 1" above the large sump filter. This will identify if the water is being pushed by a crack in the spray arm causing waves to push to the front or if there is an overfill situation.

Hello Tom, doubtful that will correct the leak, when this type of leak occurs there is a misdirected jet of water aimed at the door from somewhere inside the tub. You have to find the jet, look for spray arms that are cracked/worn, the mounting for the spray arms, the water tube connection for the water fill tube from the rear of the lower spray arm cover.

Gary, make sure the door is square to the tub seal when you close the door, if it is not square, the seal will leak. You can replace the door seal , especially if it looks flat or has a calcium build up on it. Part number would be W11177741
