This defrost timer assembly cycles the refrigerator between cooling and defrost modes to prevent excess frost buildup and help maintain consistent temperatures. Replace a failed timer to restore regular defrost scheduling and reduce icing. What it does:

  • Advances the refrigerator between cooling and defrost cycles on a timed schedule.
  • Stops missed defrosts that can cause frost buildup on the evaporator and reduced cooling efficiency.
  • Addresses symptoms such as excessive frost/ice, inconsistent temperatures, or a freezer that runs constantly.
  • Acts as the control that engages the defrost heater and returns the unit to cooling when the cycle finishes.
What's included: One defrost timer assembly. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power to the appliance before servicing to avoid shock or injury.
  • Access the timer via the control panel or rear service area; document wiring or take photos before disconnecting.
  • Install the timer in the same orientation and reconnect wires to the original terminals; do not force connectors.

For Whirlpool Defrost Timer (Assembly) (Part Number: OEM12742947)

Hello Sebastian, If using needle nosed pliers to get them off does not work, you may have to cut the connector off and use crimp on connectors to re-attach them. If the wiring is damaged also you will have to repair the harness since it is no longer available and it would not be a bad idea to check the circuits that connect to the timer to be checked for continuity to ground. Normally when the harness discolors and fails, it is due to a shorted component causing excessive current flow.

Frank, When you look underneath the control panel there will be holes that have screws in them. When you remove the screws then you should be able to pull the panel down.

Jackie for Model Number Amana TH21TW

I'm not certain, but I believe I may need the Defrost Timer (AP4247645) for my frig. The motor/compressor will stop running and the freezer and fresh food sections will get warm, unless I manually slide the deepfreeze lever in the fresh food section back to Off and forward up to a number 7 until I hear a click and the motor/compressor restarts the cooling process. Cooling will take place continuously uninterrupted for up to two hours or more and then shutdown again for hours. It very rarely will restart automatically, and if not manually restarted at least a few or more times daily with the deefreeze slider (as above), the meats will get soft in the freezer and the fresh food department will get warm. This situation has lasted for several months. Since the Defrost Timer seems to be located near the Deepfreeze temperature slider where I hear the audible click to restart the motor/compressor, I thought it might be the part I need to replace. Could you please give me your expert opinion on what I need to replace/repair? If you agree that I may need a Defrost Timer, are there any installation instructions that come with the part or, otherwise follow the diagram(s) on your site? Thank you very much.

Jackie, The defrost timer would only send the unit into a defrost every 8 to 12 hours. Since you are having to turn the freezer control knob all the way down to off and then back up to 7 this would indicate a bad freezer control R9700006. There are no instructions that we can send but it is just taking out a couple of screws that hold the control in place.

Linda, based on the information you have given it sounds as if you have a defrost failure. The defrost system consists of the defrost timer R0168027, defrost heater R0130430, and the defrost thermostat R0130427. You will need to test and replace the defective part. You can test parts by using a MultiMeter MA-DM1. Here is a link from our free repair forum you can refer to for help with using a multi meter. Hope this helps, thanks! http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello Harry. The thermostat WP10442410 is located behind the back wall inside the freezer. If you remove the wall, you will see the thermostat on the top of the evaporator assembly. The defrost timer R0168027 is located in the control panel section inside the fresh food section of the unit. Hope this helps.
