This mechanical cycle timer controls wash/dry cycles and advances settings so the appliance runs through its programmed steps. Replaces a worn or non-advancing timer to restore reliable cycle sequencing and user control. What it does:

  • Advances the appliance through programmed cycles so selected functions run in order
  • Engages and disengages timed functions (fill, agitate, drain, spin/heater) as the cycle progresses
  • Common symptom fix: appliance won't advance or stays stuck on one cycle setting
  • Common symptom fix: timer knob won't turn or timer runs without changing cycles
What's included:
  • One mechanical timer assembly
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before beginning any repair to avoid shock or injury
  • Label and photograph wire connections before removal so new timer wires reconnect correctly
  • Secure mounting screws and ensure knob engagement before restoring power

For Whirlpool Timer (Mechanical Cycle Timer) (Part Number: OEM18026730)

Susan, If the second rinse switch is a dial in which you have to select the cycle then this switch would most likely be the cause for the issue.

Yes, thanks for your help. In an interesting turn of events, my wife ran the washer again last night (intending to wring the clothes out by hand) and it now works without me doing anything to it. She said she changed some settings on the control panel, put a load of clothes in, and it ran (initially making some unusual noise during the spin cycle). Now the entire washing cycle works without a problem. If the problem reoccurs, where would I connect the voltmeter probes? Should I strip the wires going to the motor near the timer?

1 Answer

Hello Joe. You will test where the wires plug into the motor. Hopefully, the unit will continue to run for you. Thank you.

Hello Joe. Yes, you will test it by turning the timer to spin cycle and turning on the machine. If the motor has power, but does not run, you will only replace the motor. Hope this helps.

Washer fills, agitates, rinses, and drains -- it does not spin. When it gets to the spin portion on the timer, the machine makes no sound other than the progression of the timer. If only 1 rinse is selected, the wash cycle ends; if 2nd rinse is selected, it will move on to the second rinse (fill and drain) but again will not spin. Lid switch seems to work correctly (checked continuity also timer will stop progressing if lid is opened during spin cycle). Is this a timer problem (my guess) or a clutch/transmission problem.

1 Answer

Hello Joe. Test and see if the timer WP3951708 is sending power to the motor. If not, you will need to replace the timer. If there is power to the motor during spin, but it does not run, you will replace the motor assembly. The motor reverses directions during the spin cycle. Hope this helps.
