First I ordered new dishracks from KitchenAid/Whirlpool. However, they don't make the "flex row" tines anymore and there was, therefore, a big "hole" in the dishrack that arrived. I could fit a large pot in the space, but no dishes (they'd fall through). KitchenAid and Whirlpool don't even sell the parts anymore. But, to the rescue comes AppliancePartsPros.com. Replace filter unit and pump seal kit. This is a pretty straight forward repair. Removal requires a few tools: small socket set, a few torx bits, and a little patience to clean out the extra soap and crud that collects below the filter assembly around the impeller and pump. Diagnosis is also fairly straightforward as you will begin to see and feel grit on your dishes, especially on the top rack and you will see that the filter is full of the same grit.
