Overload (Thermal Protector)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP4344040

This overload is a thermal protection device that mounts on the motor/compressor and opens the circuit when excessive heat or current is detected. Replacing a weak or failed overload helps restore safe startup and protects the windings from damage. What it does:

  • Monitors motor/compressor temperature and current draw
  • Interrupts power on overheat/overload to prevent damage
  • Aids troubleshooting of start/run issues when paired with the start device
  • Common symptoms: hums then clicks off, won't start, intermittent shutdown, frequent tripping
What's included:
  • 1 thermal overload protector
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; allow components to cool
  • Access the terminal area on the motor/compressor; remove any cover
  • Note/photograph wire positions; transfer wires and fully seat the new overload on the correct terminal
  • Inspect the start relay, capacitor, and terminals for heat damage; replace any compromised parts

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You The seal on the door of the refigerator was damaged also the hinge cap needed replacing as it was cracked   Michael S. • Fredericksburg , VA • January 20, 2016

I took the new seal out of it's packaging and used a blowdryer on low heat to soften up the seal so that the crease from shipping (it was folded to ship) disappeared. Next I took the refrigerator door off, removed the old seal, & cleaned the area where the new seal would be applied. Following the video on the Appliance Pro Parts website, I re-installed the new seal and put the door back on. Last step was to snap on the new hinge cap I ordered. The video online was easy to follow and this... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You My refrigerator compressor starting 2 or 3 times each time it was called to run due to a weak overload switch   Charles W. • Mancelona , MI • January 07, 2016

I replaced the start relay and overload switch with the single part Overload/Relay part number AP3119971. Now it operates like new. Had no problem replacing part, just followed instructions. I was very pleased at a single part replacement for both, relay and overload. I was expecting just to replace the overload. This is much, mush better. It's been running for over a week with no problems, Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You The drain hose inlet was freezing inside the freezer and causing the defrost water to run onto the bottom shelf and then freeze there   David R. • Forest Hill , MD • December 13, 2014

Emailed Appliance Parts Pros.com with my problem and was advised that I needed to install an updated drain hose with a larger inlet opening. I ordered the part and installed it about 24 hrs ago and it's still working like it's supposed to. I ended up using a 3/4" wood bit to get the old drain inlet out because the rubber was too stiff to pull/push it out. Once I drilled out most of the rubber, I was able to pull it out with pliers.
