I believe the shock absorbers were bad and caused too much stress on the spring, breaking it. I replaced the spring, spring protector, and shock absorbers. I got lucky; when I got the drum back up where it belonged I saw that the door boot seal straightened itself back out and wasn’t damaged so I didn’t have to replace it. Door replacement couldn't have been easier. The only thing that tripped us up was that the new door did not include glass inner door so upon first inspection didn't look like the correct door.
