This is a hinge spring. This piece applies tension when opening and closing a dishwasher door. The hinge spring prevents the from door dropping too quickly and hitting the ground when the machine is opened. This hinge also ensures that the door is completely shut and that there are no leaks during the washing cycle. If the door frequently falls open, will not stay closed, or will not latch this part may need to be replaced. The repair is fairly easy, but care should be taken because the hinge holds tension and may snap while being replaced. Keep in mind many dishwashers have springs on both sides of the door, so make sure to verify if the machine needs one or two replacements. This is an OEM part sourced directly from the manufacturer. It is sold individually. This part is compatible with machines from manufacturers like General Electric and their brands Hotpoint, and RCA.
Removed two screws for the bottom access panel and two screws on the underside of the countertop. This allowed the dishwasher to be moved forward approximately 3 inches to access the spring location. There was no need to disconnect power or water. Tilting the top of the washer forward allowed additional room to hook the top of the spring to the hinge pin. The job took about 20 minutes total.
