This is a thermal cutoff (thermoprotector) mounted on or near the magnetron in a microwave oven. It acts as a safety device that interrupts power to the magnetron if it overheats, preventing damage to the component and reducing fire risk. Replace this part if the microwave stops heating food but otherwise appears to run normally, or if testing confirms the thermal cutoff has tripped and has no continuity.
Changed the internal fuse and the thermal fuses but still nothing. Also changed upper door switch still nothing. Went on line but could not find anything that matched my symptoms. Microwave won't power up or shuts off after seconds? Failed thermostats cause intermittent operation. Test for continuity—straightforward repair.
Removed OTR microwave. Checked the thermostat switches while power was applied with a DVM. Noticed that when a certain set of wires was moved the slightest bit the microwave would power up. Traced the wires to the thermostat switch for the cavity. Noticed that where one (of two) Faston terminals was crimped to the thermostat switch was black. (should be copper colored). This fan motor assembly cools the magnetron inside the microwave by circulating air to prevent overheating during operation. It includes the motor and fan blade as a complete unit. Replace this assembly if the microwave shuts off unexpectedly due to overheating, makes unusual noises during use, or the fan is no longer spinning.
The microwave was shutting off after operating fine for a minute or two. Found that the fan that cools the magnetron had its fan blade assembly spinning free on the fan motor's output shaft. Tried to epoxy the two and failed. Ordered a new fan assembly and it is fixed. Read more
