Located at the bottom of the washer, this mechanical assembly transfers power from the motor to agitate and spin the wash basket. Replace it when the washer fills but won't agitate, makes grinding noises, or fails to spin clothes dry.
Put in a new transmission. Took about two hours. Thanks to a great YouTube video. New parts were right on. Everything fit perfect. Runs like new again. Read more
Lower brake bearing
I first replaced the two drive belts and the motor springs. That didn't fix it although they did need replacing. I then replaced the two bearings and the brake assy. The washer runs like new. If you replace the brake assembly, you should also replace the bearings. It will save a tear down later on. The Maytag repairman wanted $600.00 dollars to do the job. I did it for less than $200.00. Perfectly! Replacing Agitator Shaft is not for the faint of heart. Replacing output shaft pinion gear on the bottom of the agitator shaft requires care, experience and patience with pressing/driving drift pins without damaging the gear itself. One slip of the drift/punch or press apparatus will ruin the gear/teeth face and will lead to failure of the transmission internally when put back into service. Washer shaking or stopping mid-spin? This unbalance plunger detects off-center loads to maintain proper spin speed. Direct replacement part.
Before I took it apart I thought it had a broken tub tensioner spring. After some research, I thought it might be worn damper pads. Upon disassembly I found the springs and pads intact, pretty amazing for a 25 year old machine. All I did was re-lubricate the pads and put everything back together and give the spring adjusters a half a turn more tension. Test ran two loads and it ran perfect.
