Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Transmission shaft floated up while doing a load of wash then the agitator would not turn   Larry A. • Rockford , IL • February 28, 2017

Removed the agitator, then the spacer and lock screw, then the inside tub, then the mounting stem I replaced the agitator collar to fix the issue The hardest part on this project was removing the locks with the spanner wrench. It is not easy to break loose if the machine has never been repaired in 15 years. You need the rubber hammer and really hit hard to get loose. This is what took the longest. (Approximately 1 hour for me) Read more

I followed the excellent video demonstrating how to replace the fasteners. Although this sounds simple I would have struggled to put them in place without a visual demonstration. Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Transmission needed replaced after 16 yrs   John G. • York , PA • March 28, 2014

Ordered my replacement unit from APP, along with a few other "while I am fixing this I should replace that since I am disassembling the washer" parts also from APP. After 2 hours of repair work, the washer is back in full working as new order. The only recommendation to others is make sure you order ALL the parts for the job. Take time to investigate all that you will or might need to replace. An ounce of prevention is worth the pound of cure. Like the old line; measure twice and cut... Read more

Lower brake bearing

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You After a process of elimination it turned out to be the brake assembly   Ken M. • Pierson , MI • September 13, 2016

I first replaced the two drive belts and the motor springs. That didn't fix it although they did need replacing. I then replaced the two bearings and the brake assy. The washer runs like new. If you replace the brake assembly, you should also replace the bearings. It will save a tear down later on. The Maytag repairman wanted $600.00 dollars to do the job. I did it for less than $200.00. Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Washer would only spin.   Byron V. • Bellevue , MI • February 04, 2020

Found the wonderful parts diagrams you most generously share online and a couple of YouTube videos . I determined it should be repairable. In my cast the agitator shaft was frozen (rusted) in place. I was very fortunate to have been able to eventually remove it with the use of a lot of BP penetrating oil and heat. Long and short the replacement parts fit perfectly and the washer is running like new. Special thanks to the online support make my repair possible. Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Vibration and clunking noises during spin cycle   Frank F. • Somers , CT • January 13, 2019

Before I took it apart I thought it had a broken tub tensioner spring. After some research, I thought it might be worn damper pads. Upon disassembly I found the springs and pads intact, pretty amazing for a 25 year old machine. All I did was re-lubricate the pads and put everything back together and give the spring adjusters a half a turn more tension. Test ran two loads and it ran perfect. As a side note, the springs that came and were supposed to be for my machine were too short, smaller... Read more
