When I pulled out the dryer from the wall, I could see dust/lint had accumulated everywhere and the vent system was compromised. I vacuumed up the dust/lint accumulation outside and then inside the vent system. I then opened the lower cabinet to clean and check its condition. This is the door switch only. For the door switch including the mounting clip order LA-1005.
I first unplugged the dryer, lifted the top of the dryer, then removed two screws that hold the front panel to the side panels. I removed the cable clip that holds the wires for the switch to the front panel, and removed the wires from the switch. I then removed the switch from the clip that holds the switch in place. This was a Maytag DE312 actually a Whirlpool labeled as Maytag) and is 27 years old. Replaced motor, drive belt and drum rollers. One tricky part was the motor because the new motor comes with integral starter and it was necessary to cut off existing female spade connectors on some wires and crimp on new connectors. Instructions were adequate but need to be carefully followed and a decent electrical stripping and crimping tool must be at hand. I bought a new motor drive pulley because another... Read more

Deciding I had nothing to lose I decided to tear them apart. After locating the ApplianceParts Pros.com web site I watched videos on the most common problems and took a step by step approach to troubleshooting each of the units. The top one required a fan, shroud cleanup of the guide rollers and other maintenance. The lower unit needed a new motor, timer and clean up of the guide rollers.
