I replaced the control panel. I guess the problem could also have been the control board. I felt more certain about purchasing the control panel after removing the old one, and ohm-ing out pins that should have indicated small resistance when pressing front panel buttons, but all indicated open circuit. A result of moisture that ruined the thin wires in the ribbon cable, apparently a common problem of the Maytag/Whirlpool dishwashers and the subject of a class action lawsuit (Maytag would... Fix a dishwasher that won't start or respond to buttons. This electronic control board restores cycle selection and timing. Moderate DIY repair.
Control buttons acting erratic or not responding? This dishwasher control panel vent seal blocks moisture and dust that cause button failure. Easy install.
Push buttons are membrane-type. The wiring inside the membrane corrodes over time (and heat and moisture) until it just doesn't work at all. The membrane is integrated with the top plastic panel - not separately replaceable. Replaced the control panel that's on the top of the door. Easy to fix! Only gotcha is that you have to take off the cover of the control box (inside the door) and slide the locking bar out on the connector for the ribbon cable - the cable doesn't just push in, you have... I bought the part from AppliancePartsPros.com. Removed water inlet hose. Removed water outlet hose. Removed water inlet valve which was held on with one screw. Replaced the water inlet value. We scoured the web and there are few references to this so I want to add it in case it helps. Replacing hinges solved the popping opening issue. We could not solve our dishwasher door issue after a number of other tries: Latch, Catch, Ropes that attach to the springs that pull the door closed. I tend to believe the solve could be different b/c all these things work together. But for us, we were skeptical that the hinge swap would work and we were very pleasantly surprised. Read more
