Wessley R Trinity , AL July 28, 2020 The issue was a 10+year old Maytag washer wouldn't spin nor would the agitator move but the motor would run. Upon removal of the lower inspection panel on the front of the machine, my 20 year old son thought the motor was bad by the smell. But he did discover what turned out to be the belt tensioner pulley laying inside the machine. After he pronounced it dead, without a thought to the idler pulley, I looked at the machine and determined the lack of movement was due to the idler pulley having "fallen" off the shaft by looking at the illustrated parts break down provided on this website. Ordered the parts over the phone at 1 PM on Friday afternoon. I had the parts by Saturday, by 11 AM!!!! I did pay for the rush shipping...but that was incredibly fast. Removed the remaining front cover from the machine, removed the hoses, electrical connection from the motor/pump assembly. Parts installed, washer running almost like new, for a 10+-year-old machine...about an hour. (Had the 20-year-old do it...it was good for him to see things could be repaired.) Not to mention the fact that I didn't have to spring for an $800.00 washer which sadly, probably wouldn't be as reliable as this one. All told a good experience. The idler was damaged, the edges of the top/bottom lip of the roller were broken off, but only on one side, so I had my son place that side on top, so gravity would prevent the belt from contacting that portion of the idler. All told 45 minutes to remove the motor, install, and back to operation. Will definitely order again-I have the matching 10+ year old dryer...so it is coming. John L Butler , PA August 10, 2014 Appliance: Model AMANA ALW880QAW Broken belt Used instructions on how to replace the belt on this washer. Seems like this model burns up belts fairly often. Harold V Mount Vernon , WA November 18, 2018 Appliance: Amana Top Loading Washer NAV5800AWW Loud squeal when spin cycle begins When I removed the lower service panel (a nice feature of my Amana, you don't have to remove the whole front!) I could see the belt was severely cracked and there was a lot of black residue in the bottom of the case. I pulled the motor/pump assembly and found that the idler pulley was not rotating very well. Replaced the belt, pulley and thrust washer. Repair was pretty straightforward except that I misrouted the belt on my first attempt and had to pull the assemby out. Toughest part was that I had removed one of the heavy springs that keep the drum assembly balanced, and had a heck of a time getting it back into position. Finally realized I could get some lateral movement out of the drum and I wedged it such that the spring distance was a bit shorter. Didn't have to go to the gym that day! Cleaning all the black stuff up took as much time as the repair, and it would have gone faster had I paid more attention to the belt path when I took it out. I wouldn't have had to take the motor/pump assembly out twice! Read More... 2 People found this story helpful Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 2+ hours Tools: Pliers, Socket Set
John S Cleveland , OH February 22, 2016 Appliance: Amana Top Loading Washer ALW990EAW Idler pull came apart and somehow the belt got jamed and melted Replaced the belt and idler pulley on a sixteen year old Amana washer. Very easy repair by removing the motor and separating the drain pump from the motor to properly position the new belt. Made easier by watching the Appliance pros video. I bought a second idler pulley as pulley wheel eventually separates itself from the pulley bearing and drops to the bottom of the washer base pan. Third pulley in sixteen years.
