How to Troubleshoot & Replace Speedqueen AP2406161 / 38174 Agitate Belt (Washer)

Unplugged power.Removed 2 screws at bottom of front cover 5/16 nut driver. Lifted bottom of cover and pulled down to release top clips. With vice grips removed 2 front tub springs. unplugged wire harness from motor. Removed drain hoses from pump. Removed 4 bolts from motor mounting frame. removed motor and drain pump assembly. brushed and vacuumed dirt and belt debris from bottom of machine. Turned motor pump assembly upside down removed 3 spring clips holding pump to bottom of motor. Removed pump and cleaned motor. Put new belt on motor pulley and reinstalled drain pump. Mounted motor back in machine (4 bolts) guided belt around tub pulley and tension pulley. plugged wire harness back into motor. Reinstalled drain hoses. Reinstalled tub springs. replaced front cover plugged it back in and ran thru cycle. Only issue was finding proper part due to model # being a commercial machine and not finding my model # listed as printed on my machines. Easy repair less than 30 minutes except for time doing a good cleaning since I was in there.

When I removed the lower service panel (a nice feature of my Amana, you don't have to remove the whole front!) I could see the belt was severely cracked and there was a lot of black residue in the bottom of the case. I pulled the motor/pump assembly and found that the idler pulley was not rotating very well. Replaced the belt, pulley and thrust washer. Repair was pretty straightforward except that I misrouted the belt on my first attempt and had to pull the assemby out. Toughest part was that I had removed one of the heavy springs that keep the drum assembly balanced, and had a heck of a time getting it back into position. Finally realized I could get some lateral movement out of the drum and I wedged it such that the spring distance was a bit shorter. Didn't have to go to the gym that day! Cleaning all the black stuff up took as much time as the repair, and it would have gone faster had I paid more attention to the belt path when I took it out. I wouldn't have had to take the motor/pump assembly out twice! 

I installed a new capacitor, the washer works fine now. 

I ordered a new belt on Friday evening around 5 pm. I was stunned it arrived the next day, Saturday, when I selected standard ground shipping, (shipping label indicated the origin was KY and I am in TX). The drain lines had to be disconnected and the motor removed to replace the belt. The old belt caused the belt tensioning arm to be knocked out of alignment which had to to be realigned. A wedge under the motor helps tremendously to remove and reinstall it otherwise you are trying to hold it up with your hand. You are in an awkward position for this and you'll end up scraping you knuckles if you use your hand. The bolts for the motor housing, a spring hold down, and an electrical component which had to be removed were easily accessible. This is a top loader machine with the motor underneath. 

Replaced the belt and idler pulley on a sixteen year old Amana washer. Very easy repair by removing the motor and separating the drain pump from the motor to properly position the new belt. Made easier by watching the Appliance pros video. I bought a second idler pulley as pulley wheel eventually separates itself from the pulley bearing and drops to the bottom of the washer base pan. Third pulley in sixteen years. 

This is a relatively simple fix if you have any mechanical skills at all. Took about 30 - 45 minutes to complete and only 1 beer. 

Replaced the drive belt while watching a video on YouTube. This is the first time I repaired or changed a belt on a washing machine. It is helpful to have a second pair of hands as the motor and pump combination is difficult to hold in place due to the weight while replacing the 4 screws that hold it in place. 

Dismantled the washer to get to the belt drive put the new belt on and reassembled the washer. 

The belt was in very bad condition so thought replacing that would fix the problem.
