Whirlpool WP9708175 Stand Mixer Planetary Gear Assembly OEM Part

Tore down transmission gear case of my Kitchenaid Professional 600 stand mixer and replaced worn components to include front and rear sleeve bearing, worm gear thrust bearing, worm follower gear, drive shaft retaining clip, center shaft o-ring, and dowl pin. Additionally, replaced black plastic transmission housing with metal one and new gasket, replaced entire planetary assembly, and repacked transmission with OEM food grade grease. After tear down, but before rebuild, l cleaned all components completely of all old gear grease including leakage in stand mixer itself. Note: Kitchenaid has not made an engineering change to the driveshaft/planetary assembly. The drive shaft is tension fit to the planetary. Over time and use, this tension is lost and the planetary plate slips down and eventually off the drive shaft. So, this repair will need to be completed again sometime in the future. I would have rated this experience 5 stars had this been corrected.

The vertical shaft showed a slight bend so I replaced the bent shaft with a new shaft. I should have done that when I was replacing the gears. Although we have not mixed any more bread, I ran the mixer at a both low and high speeds for several minutes without any more gear clashing noises. It now purrs ! The top bearing on the original vertical shaft had slipped down the shaft when I first examined it. This may have been the source of all of my problems with this mixer. It may have been manufactured or assembled incorrectly. But we got about 18 months of success before needing the gear and shaft repairs.

Replaced all the gears due to stripped worm gear and metal contamination in the grease, repair was easy, mixer works just like new again, it lasted 12 years

Took it apart

The planetary on my Kitchenaid fell OFF, leaving the main shaft still attached. I checked YouTube and found a video from AppliancePartsPros.com showing how easy it was to replace. While watching the video, I also learned about the transmission housing upgrade. My old one was plastic, while the upgrade is aluminum, so I went ahead and ordered it also. All total, I have maybe an hour and a half of time in the repair and almost $100 in parts. Considering I paid almost $500 for a new mixer almost 10 years ago, this was an easy, and inexpensive fix. 2 screwdrivers, and snap ring pliers were all I needed.
