Roy O Myakka City , FL March 14, 2015 Appliance: Model KITCHEN AID SUPERBA MICROWAVE The door was unsupported by the torsion springs and light was out i had experience with another similar unit so i knew the problem One of the most difficult parts is simply locating the correct replacement parts. Your website helped me though I tried unsuccessfully to locate a stronger replacement. You simply require a good phillips screwdriver - I find the socket style with replaceable bits work better. To change the springs and lite bulb you need to first remove the 2 side SS trim pieces and then the bottom SS trim piece. Then you have access to the 2 screws on the bottom that retain the entire microwave. removing them allows you to slide out the entire microwave a few inches. aT THIS POINT FWD YOU NEED TO SUPPORT THE DOOR ITSELF AS IT CAN BE DAMAGED. Then there are 2 screw inside the oven door on top and 2 more outside on the bottom holding the door brackets. removing them all allows the outer SS face to come off and allows access to the 2 bottom plastic trim screws. Removing these you can remove the trim and get to the torsion springs. These are difficult to describe but you should be able to look at the old ones to see how they fit to install the new ones - a pair of needle nose pliers helped here. The lite bulb is reached by sliding out the unit more and lifting off the insulation - it has spring retainers that are fairly straight forward, Read More... 17 People found this story helpful Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 30-60 minutes Tools: Pliers, Screwdrivers
Jim F Oro Valley , AZ July 02, 2014 Microwave door torsion spring replacement We have a Whirlpool, stainless steel, built in microwave and conventional oven combination wall unit that was installed more than 12 years ago when we built this house. There are two torsion springs that support the weight of the microwave door. Several years ago, we replaced a failed, right hand spring. So, we already knew where to go for an excellent set of instructions and the replacement part itself. This is a common enough failure that the springs are widely available but, I decided to purchase from Appliance Parts Pro dot com because of the excellent tutorial with links to the correct parts and the promise of quick delivery. The actual repair was almost anti-climatic. The first step was disassembling the door to determine which of the two springs had broken. Then the replacement spring was ordered and the door put back together for use during the two days it took the spring to arrive. Yep! Only three days total from the loud snap when the spring broke to a fully repaired microwave. All you need is a screwdriver. The pliers I listed was a needle nose for picking up dropped screws. I used some small tie wraps in place of tape to restrain the spring centers as instructed in the tutorial. Heed the warning about the one fragile part of the door. I cracked ours, but was able to reinforce it easily with super glue and tape. My wife is very pleased and so am I.
