Opened up transmission housing and removed all gearing to inspect for worn parts. The Professional 6 is all metal (except for the transmission housing cover) so just a couple of gears looked worn. Planetary needed adjustment, although the gearing was solid. Replaced the transmission housing cover with a new metal version. Cleaned out the old grease (all that grease...) and repacked the gears. Closed it up, ran it for 30 minutes to set in the new grease, and everything sounds smooth and quiet. Two things if you decide to try this very doable rebuild: You will need high-quality snap ring pliers. I fought with that thing for over an hour because my snap ring pliers were substandard. Also, be prepared to deal with grease. Lots and lots of grease. I also give Appliance Parts Pros highly my highest recommendation for quick service and high-quality parts. Being somewhat handy I told I would be glad to take a look and see if there was something I could do. Got the mixer home and found the transmission housing broken and front bearing breaking up also found worm gear assemble chewed up some. Found Appliance Parts Pro online and was able to all the parts needed to make what I am sure will be a long lasting repair. Once unit was cleaned of all the old grease and particles from bearing, new parts and appliance grease was added to complete the repair. Return to my friend in great working order. She was so please she called later in the day to say she had made a big batch of Pumpkin bread, Yum, thanks for your quick shipping and having everything I needed to do this project. I make a lot of bread doughs with my KitchenAid mixer, and it's used 2-3 times a week for large batches of dough. The gears began slipping, and I decided to take the mixer apart, and replace the worn gears. Replacing the transmission housings plastic cover, with the newer metal one will probably result in me not having to repeat this process, as the plastic one broke at the screw holes under pressure. I also replaced the worm gear, and the sleeve bearings.

Tore down transmission gear case of my Kitchenaid Professional 600 stand mixer and replaced worn components to include front and rear sleeve bearing, worm gear thrust bearing, worm follower gear, drive shaft retaining clip, center shaft o-ring, and dowl pin. Additionally, replaced black plastic transmission housing with metal one and new gasket, replaced entire planetary assembly, and repacked transmission with OEM food grade grease. After tear down, but before rebuild, l cleaned all components completely of all old gear grease including leakage in stand mixer itself. Note: Kitchenaid has not made an engineering change to the driveshaft/planetary assembly. The drive shaft is tension fit to the planetary. Over time and use, this tension is lost and the planetary plate slips down and eventually off the drive shaft. So, this repair will need to be completed again sometime in the future. I would have rated this experience 5 stars had this been corrected.

Not only did I replace the Planetary, but also the Transmission Housing (recommended). The biggest challenge (which really wasn't an issue) was removing and replacing the snap ring. The most time consuming aspect of the whole job was removing and replacing the food-grade grease, and overall cleanup of the unit. The repaired mixer works like a charm! Well worth the time and effort; and a lot less expense and hassle than sending the unit in to Kitchenaid!
