Joel G Prairie Du Sac , WI January 10, 2020 Appliance: Model MAYTAG 606 My washer was making a screeching noise The washer would screech when ending a cycle. I replaced the brake assembly and reassembled. Be aware that the small lock that holds the brake pulley on is a ribbed lock style that has to match the spindle to go on correctly. I didn't realize this and couldn't figure out why the pulley kept falling off during the load. Once I put it on correctly, the belts started to screech because there was too much friction on the pulley and brake assembly. I ordered new belts and replaced them. Still screeching. I had taken pictures of the brake assembly after my repair and compared them to the current condition. I found the action of the loose pulley had overtightened the brake assembly causing it to not spin freely. I simply loosened the brake assembly a couple rotations and reassembled. It works fine now. Be aware that without the Maytag wrench to remove the brake assembly this is a pound on it until it comes loose project. I used a punch against the perimeter bolts of the old brake to remove. It wasn't easy and I'm a very handy guy use to repairing vehicles etc. Read More... 1 People found this story helpful Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 2+ hours Tools: Pliers, Screwdrivers
