This air filter consists of an internal plastic frame with a foam mesh cover that captures dust and dirt. The outer, washable pad covers an accordion-style inner filter that removes even finer particles. An air filter keeps particles in the air from getting sucked into the motor, where friction will cause wear and tear to the engine. However, a filter has a limited life cycle. Eventually, it gets clogged up, which leads to limited airflow and decreased efficiency. If the engine is bogging down when it is revved up, a clogged air filter might be to blame. Simply install a new air filter and see if the motor performance improves. It is recommended to preemptively replace the air filter every spring so a clogged filter never puts a halt to a job in progress. This is an OEM part, sourced directly from MTD, and it is sold individually. In either case, the muffler should be removed and replaced to keep the noise level to a minimum. The engine and damaged muffler should be cool to the touch before repairing the lawnmower. This is a flanged lock nut. It’s designed to apply tension, typically on a joint that needs to have a certain amount of flex. As such, it’s mostly used on snowblower chutes and lawnmower handles. They can remain in place, but with a forgiving connection that can take a beating. The nut size is 3/8, with a thread size of 16. A lock nut will generally last for many years. However, the silicone ring inside will wear down if it’s frequently tightened and loosened. It needs to be replaced when it will no longer reliably remain in place. Generally, this begins as a symptom of slight slippage and worsens as time goes on. Thankfully, whether it’s being used on a snowblower or a lawnmower, this nut is generally straightforward to access. Simply unscrew the old nut, then screw the new nut on until it’s nice and tight. Our flanged lock nuts are genuine OEM MTD nuts, and they are sold individually.
