My Whirlpool MOD# W4TXNWFWQ03 SER# VS24448883 The freezer ices up, fridge not cold. the freezer coil is build up ice but the fan is running. Where the defrost timer located & the part number for this model? How to test if the defrost timer working or not? Thanks you very much!
Answer Hello Net,
The defrost timer is located in the control area inside the fresh food compartment. The replacement part number is 482493. The loose black wire should be connected to the second terminal which is labeled terminal number 1. To test the old timer, turn the small knob on the bottom which can be seen through the small dime sized opening in the units' ceiling and turn it clockwise until you hear a loud click. The unit should be in defrost from 20 to 30 minutes and start back up. While it is in defrost, you can check for voltage at the defrost heater and/or defrost bi-metal. If voltage is there and the timer cycles back out of defrost on its' own, it is good.
My refrigerator's freezer is freezing up & causing refer to be warm. Should I replace both Defrost timer (#482493) & Bimetal Defrost (#4387503)?
Answer Hello Two4qt. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
