The Defrost Thermostat is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It monitors the temperature of the evaporator coils and triggers the defrost cycle when the coils get too cold, preventing frost buildup and ensuring efficient cooling.  It operates by closing the heater circuit to initiate the defrost cycle. It opens the circuit when the temperature rises above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. It then resumes operation when the temperature drops to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Causes of a bad defrost thermostat can include regular wear and tear, exposure to moisture, or electrical issues. Over time, the thermostat may lose accuracy or stop working altogether, leading to frost accumulation or inefficient cooling.

Symptoms of a bad defrost thermostat include:

  • Excessive frost buildup in the freezer
  • The refrigerator running continuously or not cooling properly
  • The defrost heater not activating
  • The refrigerator cycling on and off frequently

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

This evaporator defrost heater melts frost from the freezer coils during the automatic defrost cycle to keep airflow unobstructed and temperatures stable. Replace it if frost quickly returns after manual defrost or cooling performance declines. What it does:

  • Heats the evaporator at set intervals to clear frost/ice
  • Restores proper airflow to maintain consistent cooling
  • Common signs of failure include heavy frost on the rear freezer panel, weak airflow or warmer fresh food temps, longer run times, or the evaporator fan striking ice
  • An open reading on a continuity test indicates a failed heater
What's included:
  • 1 evaporator defrost heater
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing
  • Access the heater behind the freezer's rear panel; it mounts at/under the evaporator
  • Note wire routing and clip locations; transfer any reusable hardware from the original part
  • Avoid bending the element or damaging evaporator fins; fully defrost ice before reassembly

This evaporator fan motor spins the freezer fan to move air across the evaporator coils and circulate it through both compartments. Replacing a weak or failed motor restores proper airflow for consistent temperatures and reliable cooling performance.

  • Circulates cold air from the evaporator throughout the freezer and fresh-food sections
  • Helps maintain even temperatures and stable cabinet conditions
  • Common symptoms: no fan sound or airflow in the freezer, refrigerator warming while freezer may stay colder, intermittent starting/stalling, or squealing/grinding from the fan area
  • Supports temperature recovery after door openings by maintaining airflow
What's included: 1 evaporator fan motor Install notes:
  • Unplug the refrigerator before servicing
  • Access from the freezer: remove shelves/ice bin and the rear panel to reach the motor
  • Transfer the fan blade and mounting hardware in the same orientation; avoid damaging evaporator fins or wiring
  • When testing, hold the freezer door switch closed—the fan runs only with the switch engaged
