Amana Refrigerator Defrost Thermostat, Sensor

• Frost buildup
• Freezer not defrosting

Condenser was encased in solid block of ice due to automatic defrost not working. Replaced thermostat and ADC control board. Working fine now. Most tedious part was using a heat gun to melt all the ice off the condenser coils. You will need a couple small wire nuts to splice the new thermostat into the existing harness (they are not included). Service tech wanted over $400 to repair, fixed it myself for half that. Thanks ! Toughest part of this repair is figuring out how to get things apart. Amana doesn't provide you a repair manual showing how to disengage the various plastic covers. Initially disassembled the bottom freezer compartment so I could get to the evaporator coils; they were completely frozen in block of ice, restricting air flow to the fridge above. By reading stories of other customers who had bought this part, the first thing I looked for when troubleshooting my near-18 year old Frigidaire was for the top to be erupted or raised up on the bimetal defrost. After we moved into our new home, we realized that the freezer was very cold and the fins were frosting over, and the refrigerator wasn't cold. We had to take it apart and manually defrost it about once every 8 to 10 days. I am not new to APP, fixed a tub belt on a Maytag dryer in the past. My frig started getting warm so I went onto to one of those "lists" sites and found a appliance repair place. My unit has a bottom freezer that is a drawer. I had to remove the drawer, rack, glides, glide tracks, and ice maker to remove the rear panel. This was a little difficult but after researching a few videos on line I learned some tricks that made it easier. I used a hair dryer to melt the ice. This is best done with 2 people having one at the back to sponge the water into a bowl from the pan to avoid a water mess. Fridge keept building up ice in defrost drain drain in freezer. Once the drain pan filled with ice it drips into fridge compartment. After taking things apart three times to thaw it out, decided to replace defrost components - heater and temperature switch. In addition to new parts, also added a 12 gauge copper wire hook that hangs from defrost heater into the defrost drain. Watched a few of your well put together videos and could not afford a new Refrigerator right now because it was a built in so decided with the frost on the bottom of the freezer grill and the Refrigerator warming up decided to replace the Heater Element and Thermostat Defrost which took some time but so far so good lets hope that is all that is needed saved over 10,000.00 dollars for a new 48" built in for now! After watching numerous videos I was able to discern that the problem was with one of the following: the timer, the heater, or the thermostat. a short time check showed me that the timer was working so that narrowed it down to the other two. Not having the necessary tools to check those two I ordered both parts. I removed the shelves and the shelf holders, took the back panel off, loosened the evaporator. Removed the heater element and the thermostat. Re-installed the evaporator the back panel, shelve holders and shelves. Then I located the defrost timer in the refrigerator. Read more
