Hello Laura, You cannot see the notches. You just have to use a small screwdriver and press up on one end while applying a bit of outward pressure on the control, press toward the center while continuing the pressure, then toward the other end. If you continually apply a slight outward pressure on the control as you slide the screwdriver across the bottom you can actually feel when you hit the notch. Don't bother looking for the notches. You cannot see them. If you look at the new part, you can see where the notches are from the small cutouts. The new control will have to be programmed. The part will have instructions with it since every one programs differently. Please let us know if you do not receive the instructions and we will get a copy out to you.
