Answer Terry, No the float assembly doesn't need or have any "routine maintenance", as long as the water is hot enough and you use the proper amount of detergent, you'll be fine. Yes there is a "chopper" blade inside the pump assembly, it is sometimes referred to as a " soft food" chopper or maserater, it will grind larger larger sized waste articles and flush them down the drain system.
