The Agitator Base is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component is located at the bottom of the agitator assembly and is responsible for supporting the agitator while it moves clothes during the wash cycle. This is the bottom half of the agitator. Roglin, You don't need to remove the tub to access the filter plug kit 285868 You do need to remove the agitator, though. You will most likely find the plugs to be full of lint. The original filter assembly was removed from production and was discontinued several years ago. But, the " bad greyish lint deposits on all black garments" is more likely due to undisolved detergent, and or "overloading". It could also be due to lint transfer from one article to another, when the clothes are in the laundry basket.
