Customer Questions and Answers for Bake Element (Lower Oven) by Whirlpool

4.89 (64)
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18023106
Manufacturer Part Number: WP3177420

This replacement bake element restores the lower oven heat in electric ranges/ovens. It brings back proper preheating and even baking performance when the original element is burned out or physically damaged. What it does:

  • Provides the primary heat from the bottom of the oven during Bake cycles
  • Common signs of failure: no heat in Bake, very long preheat times, uneven baking, or visible blisters/cracks on the element
  • If Broil still works but Bake does not, the bake element is a likely failure point
  • Located at the bottom of the oven cavity to deliver even, consistent heat
What's included:
  • 1 bake element
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power at the breaker and let the oven cool completely before servicing
  • Remove oven racks; take out the element's mounting screws and gently pull the element forward
  • Transfer the two wires to the new element, keeping them from slipping back into the oven cavity
  • Reinstall the element and screws, restore power, and test Bake
Diagnostic tip:
  • With power disconnected, check the element for continuity; an open circuit typically indicates a failed element

Thanks for your previous answer! Now I wonder if the element is the problem. I checked the resistance with an ohm meter. There is continuity and it shows 25 ohm resistance. I checked that there is voltage (120volts)at the wires that connect to the element when the oven is on "bake" and no voltage when i change the dail broil or off. I'm wondering why it's 120 when the oven is in 240 circuit. Hope I'm not wearing out my welcome -- thanks for your help!!

Answer

Dick, you're correct, You should read 240 VAC across the element wires with the control in a bake cycle. Apparently you have lost a power leg to the element. You most likely have an open thermal fuse located behind the control panel in the area of the door latch assembly 814505 or an open wire. Thanks and Good Luck
