Hello Craig, It sounds to me as though the pump has leaked at some point in the past and the motor shaft has rusted. I have run into this situation quit a bit and it is very simple to rectify. Simply use a piece of sandpaper on the motor shaft and the excess will come off easily. Then the pump will slide on without much effort at all. DO NOT USE A HAMMER ON THE PUMP! If you do this, you will be re-ordering the pump as it will break under the impact of the hammer and if by some weird chance it doesn't, it will cause the seal to leak.
