John for Model Number LAT8904AAE

Our washing machine began to shake strongly during the spin cycle. It's 25 yrs old, but I wanted to fix if possible. I took it apart and replaced the snubber pads. The 3 centering springs appeared to be in pretty good condition. That part, WP22001300 is discontinued, so I was not able to obtain new ones in a reasonable amount of time. Instead I tightened them an extra single revolution of the bolt nuts. I re-assembled the machine, leveled it and started it up. The shaking was significantly reduced, but there is still modest shaking. The wash room is one that was intended for a washer and dryer, and for 15 years here it's been fine. There are 3 or 4 things that I think could help, or be an issues, so 3 questions: 1) Is it ok to tighten the centering springs more? I have no idea at what point I might overstress them. 2) How level is level? If I'm within the two black lines that are on every level, is that good enough? 3) There was what looked like evidence of past water damage when I replaced the flooring in that room recently... but it could have been from the previous owner. I decided to get one of those plastic water containment trays to put under the washer, just in case. I put slider pads under it so I can easily manuever the washer around the floor when I want. Could that be causing my problem? I realize that if there was water damage it could have been worse than I think, and the entire floor may need reinforcement, though I think I'd need an expert to assess that. Anyways, appreciate your thoughts, thank you!

Answer

Hello John, I would not tighten the tub springs any further. Check that the inner tub is still centered in the outer tub. Other then that watch for plastic-type drain pains in that if it has ridges in the bottom and the washer's legs are resting on then they can cause the washer cabinet to rock. If it is practical you can try moving the washer to a solid floor area and run just an empty tub in a spin cycle as a countercheck if its a flooring problem. As long as the washer is close to level that is ok.
