Customer Questions and Answers for Compressor Start Relay by Whirlpool

By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM17363361
Manufacturer Part Number: W10613606

The Compressor Start Relay is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This component helps to kickstart the compressor, facilitating the refrigeration cycle that cools the interior of the fridge.

Such issues can stem from electrical failures within the relay, physical damage, or wear and tear from regular use. When the relay does not function correctly, it can lead to inconsistent cooling and, in severe cases, cause the compressor to overheat and fail prematurely.

Symptoms of a failing Compressor Start Relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or not cooling at all
  • A noticeable clicking sound emanating from the back of the refrigerator, indicating the relay is trying to start the compressor but failing
  • The refrigerator starts and stops frequently, unable to maintain a constant temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Answer

Abe, if there is not frost occurring on the back panel of the freezer, the next step would be identifying if the compressor and condenser fan motor are operating or receiving 120VAC. If not, the refrigerator temperature sensor 12002355 would need to be tested for resistance to identify if it is operational as it should measure 10K Ohms at 77°F. If the sensor tests good, then the main control W10890094 would be the failure. However, if the compressor and condenser fan are receiving voltage but the compressor is not running, the failure would likely be in the start device W10613606.
