This is a 60 Hz electromechanical timer that controls the sequence and duration of wash, rinse, and spin cycles in a washing machine. It uses a small motor and a series of internal cams and contacts to advance the machine through each stage of the laundry cycle. Replace this timer if the washer gets stuck on one cycle, skips cycles, won't advance, or fails to start altogether.

David, You will have to replace the timer WP8557301 if the timer shaft is broken or distorted. To replace the timer, you will need to remove power to the washer, slide the washer out enough to access the Phillips head screw in the back side of the console end cap(s). Tip the console assembly back on the hinges that secure the top of the console to the washer back panel. Plastic body timer : To remove the timer knob, push the knob in from the front. At the back of the timer, pull the black tab out approximately 3/16 ", then pull the timer knob off the shaft. Slide the timer dial from the timer hub. Unplug the wiring harness connector from the timer assembly terminals. Remove the one(1) hex head screw securing the left side of the timer assembly to the console mounting plate. Then lift the left side and slide the tabs at the right side of the timer assembly from the console mounting plate. Reverse the procedure and test the washer for operation.
