Customer Questions and Answers for Timer (Dishwasher Cycle Control) by Whirlpool

4.89 (64)
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18039495
Manufacturer Part Number: WP8557301

This mechanical timer sequences the dishwasher through its wash, drain, and dry steps. Replacing a failing timer restores proper cycle advancement so the dishwasher starts, progresses, and finishes cycles reliably. What it does:

  • Times and sequences power to the wash motor, drain pump, fill valve, and heater for each stage of the cycle
  • Advances the cycle automatically and moves the dial/indicator through programmed steps
  • Coordinates wash, rinse, and dry durations for consistent results
  • Typical failure symptoms: cycle won't advance or stops mid-cycle; runs too long; must be advanced manually; timer knob won't turn
What's included:
  • 1 mechanical timer assembly
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power at the breaker before servicing; do not rely on the control panel to turn the unit off
  • Access the timer from the control console/inner door; remove screws to reach the component
  • Photograph/label wire positions and transfer leads to the new timer one at a time
  • Reuse existing mounting hardware and knob; ensure the shaft orientation matches before reassembly

Hello Tim, It is a possiblility that the wire could have shorted out the timer or the motor. The motor when it shuts down is actually what relays back to the buzzer. Can not tell for sure due to the model number listed is for a washer and we would need the dryer model to look at schematics. Please post your model number with a new question on the parts page. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/modelnumber_locator.aspx
