This mechanical cycle timer regulates the sequence and duration of the washer's programs. Replacing a worn timer restores proper cycle advancement, helping the machine start, progress, and complete wash, rinse, and spin stages as designed.

  • Sequences power to the drive motor, pump, and water valves through each stage of the cycle
  • Advances the internal cam and contacts to move the washer from wash to rinse to spin
  • Helps with: cycle not advancing or stopping mid-cycle; won't start on certain settings; no agitate or no spin in selected cycles; knob won't turn or feels loose
  • Mounts in the control console and interfaces with the cycle knob
What's included: One mechanical timer assembly. Install notes:
  • Unplug the washer before servicing
  • Open the control console; remove the knob/dial and the timer's mounting hardware
  • Photograph or label wiring; transfer leads to the new timer one at a time to matching terminals
  • Reassemble, ensure the knob indexes correctly, and run a test cycle

Ann for Model Number LAT 9704 AAE

I have a 1995 Maytag washer that stopped spinning out on all of the cycles except for delicate. I put off ordering a timer while the delicate cycle still worked for the last 4 months or so. Last night, the delicate cycle stopped working as well. The machine would fill on all of the other cycles, and proceed through (timer advanced) the cycle until finished, but would do nothing while in the spin section of each cycle (timer still advanced, but other than an occasional click, I'm assuming whenever the machine was going to do something different, and at the end when the spin cycle is shutting down). Last night, the machine filled and agitated without any trouble, but the machine was still full at the end of the delicate cycle and the dial had already moved past the spin cycle to the end. This morning, I syphoned out the water and then tried one more time to see if the spin would work. Instead of silence when I tried it last night on the delicate spin cycle, I heard a loud humming noise, as if perhaps the motor was trying to run, but nothing inside the machine was moving. It only made this noise on the delicate cycle spin section, as I tried each of the other cycles as well, but only had silence and no movement in the machine on those cycles. I had assumed that the timer had gone bad and needed to be replaced, but now with the loud humming, I am wondering if the motor is also going out, or if there are some additional parts I also need to check before ordering the timer and motor. Can you help me narrow down the problem parts and figure out which ones need to be tested and/or replaced? Thank you so much for your help!

Answer

Hello Ann. It sounds like the timer is bad and will need to be replaced in the unit. It can cause the motor to hum in the unit.
