This is a variable speed pulley, designed as a genuine replacement part for use in select lawn tractors and riding mowers. The variable speed drive pulley is designed to control the drive belt, in combination with the throttle and choke, to help control the engine speed and provide the right level of movement during the mowing process. The pulley is subject to repetitive motion and constant stress, which can cause it to wear. It can become bent or damage from impact, as well. A damaged or broken pulley will cause the engine to malfunction or not work at all, rendering the tractor useless until it is replaced. Using a genuine OEM replacement like this model is essential. This specific drive pulley fits select models from Craftsman, Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, and Murray. It is sold as an individual unit. Be sure to disconnect the spark plug before working on the engine. Allow the engine to cool completely and wear gloves for safety. Several tools will be required for this job, including flathead and Phillips screwdrivers as well as a socket or wrench set.
