The control buttons were all causing the wash cycle to change, rather than their normal functions (temp, spin, start, water level, cancel, etc...)
We replaced the control board. It was a fairly quick job with the help of a YouTube video. It takes about 20 minutes if you count time to clean up built up dirt and residue. Please note that the plastic tabs and projections that hold things like the front panel assembly to the washer get very brittle and easy to break as the machine ages. The plastic is pretty awful on these things, so pry gently and do not over tighten any screws that bear down on plastic parts. The spindle for the round cycle select knob was difficult to pry out at first.
