How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP7018722 / WR23X37285 Light Switch

I watched the video that was on the part and within 5 minutes we were back in order. Just another note, the shipping was very fast and we were extremely satisfied with our experience. 

Part arrived super fast and the video showed me how to change the part ahead of time. The whole thing took less than 3 minutes including turning the electrical breaker off (so I didn't have to pull the fridge away from the wall to unplug it) 

I replaced the Ice Door Assembly, but had two problems. 1. The video was only about electronic touch controls, my frig is older and had mechanical controls. Disassembly was more of and event in discovery, but videos did help give me the general idea of how the system worked. 2. The new Assembly would not lay flat against the retainer mechanism which caused it to hang up on the discharge chute and not close leaving a big hole for invasive warm air. First I temporarily shimmed it with small screws, then found some small plastic tile shims that I cut and slipped into the space between the retainer and space above in Assembly's plastic retainer snaps. This snugged it up and I hope a little pressure and gravity will keep them in place. 

REPLACED THE SWITCH

It was harder getting the part out than putting it in. The new part snapped right in and I plugged the wires to it and it was working in a flash!!! It took longer to get the screws in than installing the part. :) 

Removing the old switch from my GE side-by-side was a real problem - it was located at the bottom front edge near the hinges for the door. The right side of the switch had a 'locking tab' that had to be depressed to remove the old switch. The problem was that I couldn't easily get a screwdriver or putty knife behind the switch to depress that tab since the hinges sometimes prevent me from coming from the right side. It also didn't help that I had to practically lie on the floor to get close to the switch. The removal took a lot longer than expected, but was pretty much exactly like the video tutorial showed (except that the switch in the video was at eye level and had clear access to all side of the switch!) 

The exact switch was discontinued, but the replacement part worked with a couple of modifications. The wiring harness connector pin spacing was incorrect. Cutting the connector and tightening the suckets mad it work perfectly. 

Replaced the door light switch. The repair was very easy thanks to the video on AppliancePartsPros.com website. 

Installed new light switches ordered from AppliancePartsPros.com.
