How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP7012554 / WC21X20249 Return Switch

Put a new reverse switch on it. This is actually called the top limit switch in the owners tech sheet, but on the parts diagram it is shown as two reversing switches side by side. They can be used for either, as they are the same 

I ordered two direction switches from AppliancePartsPros.com to replace the old switches and received them the next day. After replacing them, the compactor works like new! 

Took it apart found the switch was bad. Replaced it worked good. 

I determined one limit switch to be bad. I replaced both limit switches and the compactor is now functioning properly. 

Replaced both direction switches. Second repair of this problem in 3 years.

The suggested fix by Appliance Parts Pro was accurate. Put in a new switch and replaced the drive gears that were damaged and everything works GREAT. 

I was about to replace the compactor until I found this website and decided to try a new directional switch. The compactor now works like a charm after dealing with this problem for years. 

PROBLEM: Compactor motor ran but ram would not go down to compress trash. After checking all the electrical switches and gears, the trouble shooting indicated the power nuts were bad. Significant diffficulty removing the ram without damaging the reverse/limit switches and on/off switch. Definitely an engineering mistake not allowing more clearance. Replaced the power nuts, lubed them up and reinstalled the ram ( again difficulty gating past the switches!). Had to adjust the switch arms due to damage from ram removal and installation. Turned it on and voila the ram engaged the screws and all good.
