Questions & Answers

For Ge Trash Compactor Directional Limit Switch (Part Number: OEM21037671)

1 Answer

Ed, based on the information provided, it sounds like either the directional switch WC21X20249 is not properly closing the contacts from the red wired terminal to the blue wired terminal when the ram is in the downward position, or the motor WC26X10006 centrifugal switch is not closing when it has reached its compaction limit when the compactor is half full. The directional switch can be tested for continuity at the mentioned terminals while pressing and releasing the plunger multiple times. When the plunger is not pressed, there should be continuity.

Jon for Model Number GCG1580L0SS

GE Profile compactor model GCG1580L0SS. Works normally except on ram retraction - as soon as it hits first switch on way up it starts cycling motor direction up & down about 5 times then cuts off. Can't open drawer until manually retracting ram via gear turn. I replaced the switch with your replacement AP6888954 (WC21X20108) and seemed to work great! Did up/down several times while on bench. Replaced the power nuts while I had it open. Put it all back together and back in cabinet - now it's doing exact same thing again. Back on bench... going to swap out the other switch I guess... what should I check next? Thanks!!!!

Jon, based on the information provided, it sounds like the start switch WC21X20150 (unfortunately, this part has been discontinued) is getting stuck in the closed position which would allow for voltage to continue getting to the motor. If the start switch catches on anything, it can cause this issue. Checking for any catch point that might be causing this switch to not disengage would be recommended.

Elrae, if the model number of the trash compactor could be provided in a new inquiry, this will allow for the most accurate information to be presented.

Elrae, There is a lower directional switch that should be what is faulty but we would need to have the model number of the unit to be able to assist properly.

David, I would have to say that you probably have an issue with the bottom lower limit switch not opening and engaging the start winding on the motor to help start the ram into the upward movement. Electrically this is the only thing that makes sense. Unfortunately, this model does not come up under our parts suppliers.

Mark, Check the top limit switch circuit first. There should be an "open" circuit between the blue and brown wire terminals, with the ram in the up position. If the switch circuit checks OK, and the wires aren't damaged, then the issue would be in the motor centrifugal switch.
