How to Troubleshoot & Replace Lg AP4514334 / 4970ED4004D Door Hinge Spring (Dishwasher)

I went to AppliancePartsPros.com and looked at the parts breakdown for the door. I had assumed a broken spring or cable so I found and ordered them. Having never changed them on an LG, I watched the video. I now new what to do. The hardest part of the whole job was pulling out the dishwasher to get at the springs and cables. There was enough slack in the hoses and wire to get it out without disconnecting them. Start to finish took less than thirty minutes. 

Replace spring and rope on door 

I'm from the boomer generation, so I have owned a number of dishwashers and this wasn't the first time I have had this happen. I immediately went to my computer and ordered both the spring and the cable door hinge assembly from AppliancePartsPros.com The price for the parts was reasonable so since I wasn't sure which part broke, I just ordered both. The parts were shipped the same day, however the shipping was a little high since could have been mailed for about half the price and I would have had the parts in the morning until having to wait for UPS to deliver in the late afternoon (not supplier fault though!). Anyway, with the dishwasher, I only had to remove the bottom cover plate and the top mounting screws and pull dishwasher out about four inches. Removed the spring and the broken hinge cable and replaced them. The worst part was stretching the spring to connect the two parts. A pair of vice grips solved the problem. It took about 20 minutes to complete the repair. 

Replaced the door hinge cables and springs on both sides of door. The dishwasher was 14 yrs. old. Only temporary snag was one of the nylon couplings would not fit on the bracket. Comparing it with the others revealed the slot was narrow and slightly curved. So I got my file set and filed it straight and wider so that it fit perfectly. Door works much better! 

Installed new cable. Before the new cable arrived the other side broke. I ordered two this time. Easy to replace. How-to video was helpful. 

Turned off water. Took bottom front panel off. Adjusted leveling legs to clear tile floor. Pulled out the dishwasher 6 inches. (I had originally installed extra long water feed tubing and waste water line so was able to do this with out disconnecting them). Replaced broken spring and spring on the opposite side. Pushed washer back in, leveled it. Tightened water line fitting, turned on water and tested for leaks. Put lower front panel back on. Hardest part was re-leveling and centering washer in cabinet opening. 

Pulled the dishwasher out, identified the problem, ordered these parts and replaced them. Easy fix. 

The most time was removing the dishwasher 

Replaced springs & cables. It had no side panels. Water, electrical, and waste tube disconnect not required. 

Had to disconnect water, drain line, and electrical. Then pull all the way out and take sides off of dishwasher to replace cable. Took longer to do all that than to replace cable.
