How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5983779 / W10083957V Dishwasher Food Chopper

Took it apart and changed the impeller and chopper. The impeller was missing it's drive. 

Looked up the symptoms on the Internet. Seems like a good cleaning of the dishwasher was in order. This included the inside as well as removing the cover on the bottom of the dishwasher to clean out screens and the food grinder. It was simple. Just need some patience. 

Hadn't had any issues with the unit for over 7 years, until I started hearing that unusual noise. Found a helpful how-to video on line, which showed me how to take down the water spray assembly (including that hidden screw!). The sump had a bunch of debris in it (toothpicks, wire ties, etc), which I cleaned...also found the chopper blade and screen were pretty beat up. Replacing the components was pretty easy, and it seems to have fixed the problem. 

Changed chopper and screen as that was damaged. Chopper was completely worn. Video was perfect! Disassembled in 10-15 minutes and reassembled in same timeframe. Works Great. Part came in 3 days when they said 7-10. Very satisfied with EVERYTHING! You guys are the best. I’ll be back! 

Bought the part from AppliancePartsPros.com and replaced the part. 

Discovered stripped threads on lower spray arm and replaced it with a new one. Also replaced spray arm seal,spray arm bearing,spinner kit,and food chopper. (chopper was clogged) Now it works like new! 

First time I took it apart and cleaned out the filter and debris under the screen. Still didn't clean properly so I realized I needed to look at the chopper assembly. That was mangled and not even attached to the motor shaft. Watched several youtube videos that gave me enough info to proceed. I did need to buy a special star shaped socket set. Needed t15 and t20 I believe. 

Using the video on the Appliance Parts Pros website, I found that the plastic stem of the food chopper that couples with the motor had broken and the screen of the food chopper was clogged with residue. Following the repair video, I was able to replace the food chopper in less than 30 minutes. Unlike the video, I did not have to separate the bottom spray arm from its base. The entire assembly can be removed in one piece as follows: a. Free the tube at the top of the dishwasher from the retaining clip. b. Free the tube at the back of the dishwasher from its retaining clip. c. Remove the ProScrub piece by hand (located at the base of the vertical tube in the back of the dishwasher. d. Lift up slightly on the tube from the bottom spray assembly and rotate to the right about 45 degrees. e. The entire water tube assembly can be pulled out as one piece. Important to use a wrench as shown in the video the compress the food chopper spring when reinstalling. 

I started doing internet research about my brand of dishwasher and having trouble cleaning. The search resulted in some YouTube hits that included a how to by Appliance Parts...... It all made sense. Ordered the parts for less than $50 and saved myself $1400 on a new DW!
