How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5951852 / W10728159 Lower Dishrack

Just replaced the things. Had to reuse old tine rows, rollers, the spray arm, etc., i.e. I removed 'em from the old racks and put on the new ones, but that was piece of cake. Also, I cleaned the food grinder and the discharge valve compartment (thank you very ???? ???? much, Internet), so spray arms around the top rack get enough water pressure now. I didn't have to buy any parts for the latter part of this little repair project, though. 

Order parts and replace. When removing attachments, do them one at a time and install them on new rack as you go. Watch for the small release tabs on the attachments (baskets, rollers and tine holders), "gently" put pressure to release; remember these units have been in hot water and they are brittle. 

Lower Rack: The fix was fairly easy, only challenge (minor) was making sure the wheels were put on the lower rack correctly. We did find that the new wheels provided tended to bind in the rear when pushing the tray in, We replaced the new wheel set (rear wheels only) with the wheels from the old set and it works fine now. Hopefully no rust for several years. Upper Rack: This required a little more work in that the wheels and the center spray assembly needed to be pulled from the old unit and installed on the old. The wheel set removal required a star type screwdriver. 

I ordered the racks from you and then searched YouTube for instructions on how to replace the rack system. I could not find instructions on your site or a maintenance manual on line. Fortunately You Tube had several videos on similar models which helped significantly. 

Easy replacement 

REPLACED THE LOWER DISHRACK. VIDEO WAS VERY HELPFUL FOR THE INSTALLATION. 

The official KitchenAid website had the basket listed for between $200 and $300. I debated whether it was worth sinking that much money into such an old machine or just buying a new one. I looked on your website and saw that the identical part offered by KitchenAid was available from you for about $100 less, and while it didn’t match the original basket exactly, it would do the trick. I ordered from Appliancepartspros.com over the phone and the employee who answered (Ally) was very helpful in answering any questions I had. The shipping was unfortunately not free, but not crazy (about $10) and arrived a little more than 24 hours after I had ordered it. The ancillary parts (wheels, brackets, utensil baskets, removable tines) were still good and I transferred them onto the new basket with a brief assist from the repair video. This basket has one more row of permanent tines than the original, so I’m saving one row of removable tines in case the other starts to rust out

I checked the model number and found the part. I called customer service to confirm that everything pictured was included with the part I'd ordered. It arrived ahead of schedule and it popped right in and fits perfectly. Now I can fill my dishwasher. 

We replaced the old Kitchen Aid dish rack assembly with a generic one from Appliance Parts. Kitchen Aid wanted $350 for a new one and I got a new one from you for $106 including shipping. Thank you, thank you!
