How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6007492 / WP279843 Heating Element

I checked the continuity on the thermal fuse (which was blown) and knew that it needed to be replaced. This made me question why it blew (i.e. what caused it to fail). I checked continuity on the thermostat (high limit) as well as the thermostat for the element. Both passed a continuity test, so I removed the high limit thermostat to inspect it and could hear it rattling inside. This leads me to believe the spring inside had failed, so I replaced this thermostat as well. Put it back together and it is working like new. 

Ordered the heater coil and got it the next day and put it on and was back in business drying clothes 

Diagnosed the fusible link was out. Decided while I was fixing that to take care of the thermostat and element. Took about 5 minutes and little money now its working like brand new. Dollar saved is a dollar earned 

1. Diagnostic showed failed thermal fuse. Other components had continuity. Ordered fuse that took 13 days to arrive. Replaced fuse. Fuse blew again on first load. 2. Next order fortunately came within 3 days. Replaced thermal fuse and heating element (even though element looked perfect with no scorch marks indicating grounding). So far, 5 loads successfully dried. 

Removed it and replaced it.
