How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3108669 / 4387913 Relay & Overload Kit

Replaced the compressor start relay. Compressor now starts and fridge and freezer nice and cold!! Pre fix symptom: Fridge lights worked, both fans worked, voltage present at the start relay. Easy fix. Diagnosis was the most time consuming, maybe one hour. Fix/repair was about 20 mins. Parts also arrived very fast. Ordered on Monday July 4th, received end of day Wed July 6th. 

I removed the compressor start relay, and overload. I discovered the relay contacts were burnt out because it rattled when I shook it. I tested continuity of compressor. I read between 6, and 8 ohms between coils, unit was ok. I replaced start relay and overload, and unit started cooling right away. Be careful to note the wires on relay when replacing since there is no diagram with new relay designating terminal points. Start capacitor is on 1,& 2, neutral on 3 terminal of relay.

Ordered a replacement Relay & Overload Kit from Appliance Parts Pros. Fixed the problem. 

I decided to take a look at the back of my unit. Pulled the cover off of the compressor electrical connections. Put my hand on the compressor and plugged the unit in. I could feel the compressor running for about 20 seconds then it would shut off. When it shut off I noticed there was a visible spark on the Overload Protection Device plugged into the side of the compressor. I figured that seemed odd. So I decided to try to replace it and see what happens. Went online and searched for the part. Found it at AppliancePartsPros.com .It also came with the relay that was also plugged into the compressor. I replaced them both and the unit started working properly. Not bad for ~$40. It was very easy for me since I have been repairing Semiconductor Equipment for about 40 years. Be very careful with electricity if you don't have any experience with it.
