How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6016541 / WPW10185982 Dryer Timer Control

I bought a new timer from AppliancePartsPros.com. I watched a short video on how to install it and I installed it! I also found a ton of dust long forgotten behind the dryer. Ha ha 

Replaced. 

Removed the back of the control panel. Unplugged wires one terminal at a time to connect to the new timer. Installed timer and secured panel. Took less than 10 minutes. 

My husband was out of town and I needed my dryer and did not want to go to a Laundromat. I diagnosed the problem based on reading a little on the AppliancePartsPros.com website. I ordered the part and watched the video that was easily located on the website. I have never repaired an appliance before, but I watch when my husband does. The video was very clear and it was an easy skill level. I followed everything the video showed and the repair went exactly as planned. I was back to drying my clothes right away. Thank you for helping me have the confidence to do the job. By the way I am a 61 year old proud housewife. 

I replaced the timer. 

Replaced the timer controller. 

- Went to the APP site (I'd been here before for my own dryer) - Reviewed the symptoms and causes and then the videos - fantastic resource for the occasional DIYer - Thurs afternoon: Opened the cabinet, identified a frayed belt; a roller and the idler puller didn't turn freely; the motor and blower seemed fine. I went home and ordered the parts from APP (resisted the Amazon-"where does this part come from a challenge" that I might have to replace again way too soon) -Saturday morning: replaced the parts, tightened all the screws on the drum, buttoned everything down, started the dryer (oh no!), closed the door, and started the dryer - works as it should. -Total time, including driving 6 miles to the friend's house twice, was about 2 hours. The process was simple and easy. I wore gloves to avoid my usual, "if I'm working, I'm bleeding" experience. Cut my unsleeved arm on some sharp, sheet metal part somehow. Totally normal DIY. 

1. Shut off power at the electrical panel. 2. Removed the upper rear console panel to expose the timer, (6 serrated hex screws) 3. Pulled off the control knob and removed the old timer (2 un-serrated hex screws) 4. Unplugged the wire harness from the old timer (5 connectors) 5. Plugged the wire harness into the new timer (5 connectors) 6. Installed the new timer back into the console (2 un-serrated hex screws) and replaced the control knob. 7. Installed the upper rear console panel (6 serrated hex screws) 8. Restored power at the electrical panel. DONE. 

Installed a new one. 

The timer replacement was a very easy process, double-checked the helpful video and the repair went smoothly.
