How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985208 / W10822278 Defrost Timer

Changed the wiring harness in the freezer. It’s the only way to change the bi-metal switch that controls the heating elements. Changed the defrost timer just in case. Had to watch a video on YouTube because there were no directions for the defrost timer. This made the project take longer. That’s when it would start freezing up. 

Bought the defrost timer, based on your expert advice. This was absolutely the best advice. The repair service that came to my house told me that I needed a new refrigerator. Your people are really wonderful. 

Replaced the defrost timer. Quick deliver . Followed your online repair video. 20 minutes. Older KitchenAid. Works Great. New models just don't seem to have the same quality construction as the older models . My ice maker still makes ice . 

Verified heater and bi metal was good. Replaced defrost timer and now all is well. Defrost cycles every 8 hrs. The only issue was the plastic post holding the timer in snapped off so I had to drill them out and use the provided stove bolts to secure it in place.

Replaced defrost thermostat. Getting in a Side by Side freezer is a tight fit. Getting to the thermostat requires removing stuff that doesn't like to be removed especially the drawer brackets. Had ordered other parts but they were not for this model. The website doesn't retain your model number as a condition for searches.
