How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6006226 / WP22001638 Timer (Washer)

I thought it was the timer, but when I saw someone on your site complaining about the exact same thing I knew I was on the right track. I ordered the part and it came in a couple of days. Took all of 15 mins. to install. Problem solved. Just out of curiosity, I did a post mortem on the old-timer and one of the contacts was burnt to nothing. Anyway, thanks again for your good service. The second time I’ve used you (same washer). 

I replaced the timer. Took all of 15 minutes to remove the old one and install the new one. The machine has been running like new ever since. 

Tried cleaning the contacts, but met with minimal success. Finally purchased a new timer. 

Replaced timer with a new one 

I replaced the timer control. I wasn't sure if my problem was with the motor or the timer. Never came up with a test procedure to rule one or the other out. Had repair man check it out and he said that he thought that it was the timer. I bought a new one thru appliance pro and installed it. The washer is now running. Easy fix once I got the timer. 

I have good knowledge of electrical circuitry so after looking at the wiring diagram, I eliminated the lid switch and check switch. The timer motor on the timer assembly was working so I checked for possible loose wires on the timer plugs and found none. I felt confident to replace the timer and also replaced the lid switch assembly because the small micro switch (check switch) was on the "hairy edge". Replaced parts and it's working fine. It's about a 25 year old top Maytag top loader and they don't make them like that anymore. Have always had good experiences and great delivery time from appliancepartspros.com.
