It may not have needed both the timer and sensor switch but based on Q and A on the APP website I replaced both parts which corrected the malfunction. The only issue was a cap inside the agitator that had accumulated softener residue and was not easy to remove. I decided that it could be replaced if I broke it and a good yank resolved the issue.
