This is a known problem with this whirpool dishwasher, that the electronics in this panel essentially die (presumably due to moisture accumulation) after a few years -- about 4 years in my case.
The only hard thing about replacing this part is that you need a "star" screwdriver to pull out all screws that hold the front panel. Besides that, it was easy to figure out, and there are youtube videos as well.
